The university was officially founded in 1471, and it started as a College of Theology with a Papal Bull from Sixtus IV. The Jesuits bought land near the old Church of San Girolama Del Rosso to enlarge their premises and put up the various colleges and schools. In 1773, the university began to offer courses in Canon Law, Philosophy, Civil Law, Theology, Logic and Metaphysics, Physics, Primary Education, Rhetoric, Reading, and Writing. After the establishment of the French Empire, the Italian government subdivided higher education into special schools: Law, Medicine, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Commerce, Language and Literature, and Chemistry. Since then, the university has expanded rapidly by adding schools and departments. In 1996, many of the departments were moved to the Savona campus, where the Department of Engineering is located.
Today the University of Genoa is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Italy. It presently has 11 faculties, about 1,580 administrative staff, 1,800 teaching and research staff, and over 40,000 students. It is lauded for its excellent engineering and economics courses and programmes.
